The
Southampton Recorded Music Society, which has been running successfully
since 1950, provides an opportunity for people of
all ages and backgrounds to meet on a regular basis for the shared
enjoyment of classical music. The presenter at each of our meetings talks
about his or her musical theme of choice, and illustrates this with
recordings played on top quality Meridian and KEF hi-fi equipment. We also organise concert visits, musical quiz nights and other social gatherings.
We
have a broad range of guest speakers, several of whom have a professional
musical background. This season, we welcome Dr Andrew Fisher for the first
time. He is an academic in the Music Department at Southampton University
and an expert on film music, among other things. Many presentations are
also given by members of the society. Typically,
we present a mixture
of the familiar and the unjustifiably neglected. Look at our current
programme to see what you are missing!
Anyone
is welcome to attend our meetings, which are friendly and informal. They
provide an excellent way to hear the music of a wide variety of composers.
It doesn’t cost much to join the society - but be prepared for frequent
temptations to purchase more CDs for your own collection!
